What is air roasting?

Air roasting, also known as fluid bed roasting, is a modern coffee roasting method that differs from traditional drum roasting in several ways. It involves suspending coffee beans in a stream of hot air, allowing for a unique and efficient roasting process. Here's how air roasting works and why it is considered by some to be better than traditional drum roasting:

Air Roasting Process:

Bean Suspension: In air roasting, green coffee beans are lifted off the roasting chamber's floor and suspended in a column of hot air. This suspension allows for even heat distribution around each individual bean.

Precise Control: Air roasters offer precise control over temperature, airflow, and roasting time. This control enables roasters to fine-tune the roast profile to bring out specific flavor notes in the coffee.

Cleaner Process: Since the beans are suspended and roasted in a continuous flow of hot air, they don't come into direct contact with a hot surface, which can lead to chaff and smoke production. This results in a cleaner and less smoky roasting process.

Quicker Roasting: Air roasting is often faster than drum roasting because the beans are exposed to consistent heat throughout the process. This shorter roasting time can help preserve the coffee's inherent flavors and aromas.

Consistency: Air roasting tends to produce more consistent batches of coffee due to the precise control over temperature and airflow. This consistency is highly desirable for specialty coffee where the goal is to highlight specific flavor profiles.

What are the advantages over traditional drum roasting?

Uniform Roasting: Air roasting ensures that each coffee bean is roasted evenly, reducing the risk of over-roasting or under-roasting.

Cleaner Taste: The absence of direct contact with hot surfaces and reduced chaff and smoke production can result in a cleaner, more vibrant coffee flavor.

Precise Flavor Control: Roasters can fine-tune the roast profile with greater precision, allowing them to emphasize specific flavor notes in the coffee.

Faster Roasting: Air roasting is generally faster, which can help preserve the coffee's freshness and flavor.

Less Environmental Impact: Air roasters tend to be more environmentally friendly because they produce fewer emissions and require less energy than traditional drum roasters.

How should I store this coffee? How long will it last?

The thing to keep in mind when storing coffee is humidity. Keep coffee away from humidity until it is brewed. Storing it in a dark, airtight container at room temperature will keep your ground coffee fresh for up to 4 weeks. An airtight container will keep whole beans fresh for longer than a month.
